The touristically over developed island of Hippocrates has an extent of 290 sq.km and abstains from Piraeus 200 nautical miles (11 hours). Capital and main harbour of the island is Kos, a city with new buildings, large streets and big squares. Afterwards the earthquakes of 1933 the city was designed by the Italians. At the entry of the harbor is located the castle of Ioanniton Knights. One of the major sights of the city constitutes the famous plane tree of Hippocrates. An other important monument that is connected with Hippocrates is Asklipieio, the infirmary of antiquity, which began to be built in the 4th century B.C. Kefalos, the picturesque village built on a hill with view to the bight of Kamari, was the ancient capital of Kos and is a region rich in monuments and in natural beauties. The entry of the gulf embellishes the islet Kastri with the small church of Saint Nikolaos and other islets around. Kefalo’s beach is a gulf of 22 kilometers, one of the most beautiful in the island. At the location of Palatia, 2 km outside Kefalos, you will see ruins from the ancient capital Astypalaia. Beautiful tourist settlement that assembles a lot of people is Tigkaki with its splendid beach. Here you can visit the church of Asomaton Taxiarchon of the 16th century.

Local festivals
In August the Hippokratia with theatrical representations, exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography and feast. Often, in summertime, in Asklipio, takes place the representation of Hippocrates oath, that is worth watching. At Kefalos the festivals of Saint Paraskevi on the 26th of July, the festival of Virgin Mary on the fifteenth of August and Saint Ioannis on 29 August.

In Kefalos at the sandy beaches of Kamari, Chrysi Akti, Polemi, Xerokampos, Lagadies, Paradisos, Kamila, Saint Theologos. At Tigaki’s settlement beach. Also at the sandy beaches of Kardamena, Marmari, Mastichari, Thermes and Saint Fokas.
