  Argosaronikos - Agistri
General info
Ancient name of the island is Kekryphalia that means adorned head. Under this name Aghistri is mentioned by Omiros as allied city to Aegina in the Trojan War. Till today various interesting archeological findings have been brought to light by excavations. Aghistri has followed the historical course of Aegina. Small, green islet in the centre of Saronicos gulf having very clean, cool sea and innumerable fascinating bays with sand or pebble.
Aghistri is extended in an area of 12,5 sq.km. and in a distance of 19 n.m. from Piraeus, 2 hours by ferryboat via Aegina or 55 minutes by catamaran. The short distance from Athens makes Aghistri an ideal choice for weekends as well.
Characteristic of the island is the forest with pines, consisting of four beautiful villages: Scala, Mylos or Megalohori, Metohi and Limenaria.
In the newly built Scala with the golden beach there is the harbour where the ship moors. Going up in a distance of 10 minutes on foot you reach the traditional village Metohi with the white houses.
East of Scala there is the new built region of Skliri, summer resort of the island.
South of Scala there is Mylos or Megalohori with the traditional islander’s houses, capital and central port with a small place for ships anchorage. In the Cultural Centre archeological findings of the island are exhibited.
Going down you will meet Limerania with the picturesque dock and an old church.
In the middle of the road connecting Megalohori-Limenaria, in the region of Dragonera, you can enjoy the combination of mountain and sea.
In the picturesque small church of St.Barbara in the region Polemi, towards Limenaria, the first improvised reservoirs of drinking water are saved.
Walking through the island you can visit old churches as Aghii Pantes in Katounti (10 min. on foot from Megalohori), Zoodohos Pighi in Mylos, Aghii Anargyri in Scala, St.Kyriaki in Limenaria, St.Nicolas (10 min.on foot from Limenaria), the church of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) in Metohi.
You can also visit the nearby islets, Metopi with the small church of Sts.Theodori, Doroussa with the church of Prophet Elias and Aponissos separated by a narrow sea ‘strip’ from Aghistri.
Aghistri is an ideal choice for everyone since there are sandy beaches as that one of Scala but also rock deserted seasides for fishing and swimming.
