| The city of Arta is built amphitheatrically in the banks of river Arachthos, in a verdurous area and possesses the place of ancient Amvrakia. It has to demonstrate important classic and Byzantine monuments, marvelous mountainous region and the amazing beauty of Amvrakikos gulf. It abstains 370 km from Athens, via Rio - Antirrio. The city’s castle, next to the river Arachthos, is one of the most well preserved castles of Greece, build by Komninos family in the 13th century. In the city it is the ancient theatre of Amvrakias, foundations of a temple from the Archaic Period on Pyrrou street and the holy road of Amvrakia on the Kommenou street, with sepulchral column that has written on it the name Amvrakia in Dorian dialect. Virgin Mary Parigoritissa, the brilliant Byzantine temple with remarkable murals and sculptures, is built on the foundations of an ancient temple and distinguishes for its architecture. The legendary bridge of Arta, abstains 1 km from the center of the city, on the national road of Preveza - Ioannina. It is the most important bridge, well-known due to its extraordinary architecture and the famous legend of the chief-builder. Its history goes back in time even before roman period, maybe in the times of Pyrros. Obviously this should be the bridge that Pinios mentioned in his writings. During the centuries, the Arta bridge has been restored and extended many times. The last restoration was in 1612. Six theatrical plays, lots of folkloric essays and two operas were written about this bridge and the legend following it. Located south of Arta, at a distance of two kilometers, is the monastery Kato Panagia. It is an old monastery with a Byzantine church of the 13th century. The ceramic decoration of the church is rich and of historical interest. Nowadays it is a monastery for women who are occupied in tapestry. 60 km north-eastern from Arta it is the mountainous village Vourgareli, built in the place of ancient ottoman city Theodorias. There you can visit the Byzantine, red church of Virgin Mary and the monastery of Saint George. |
