In Antiquity they are mentioned under the name of "Korassioi islands" with probable explanation the reference to the young women of Samos. The natural harbours and gulfs in the Middle Age as well as in the Byzantine time were locations preferred by the pirates having installed in the island their base of operations.
As for the name of the island there are two probable issues. According to the first one it is called so because of the fact that each house had had its own oven and according to the second one its name it is after the configuration of its harbour. Fourni is a complex of three small islands situated between Ikaria and Samos.
It has beaches of enchanting beauty, abudant fresh fish due to their manifold fishing capacity. Ideal place for all those liking fishing, calmness and seafoood.
Fourni have fantastic seasides, many gulfs, a lot of small picturesque beaches and very hospitable inhabitans.
Old as well as new-built houses are full of flowers. St. Nicolas is celebrated in the island.
You can visit the villages Thymena, Chryssomilia, Kampi, Kamari, Keramidou, Petrokopio where the ancient quarry is also found that has been connected with the construction of the ancient temple in Militos.
The island is surrounded by churches located up in hills. They are mentioned some of them as Panaghia (Virgin Mary), St. George, St.Nicolas, Ay-Yannis, St. Theologos, St.Marina, and the church of Annunciation in the village Koumara.
You can also visit, by boat, the beach in the opposite loc
ated islet of St.Minas going as well on touring the island. In Fourni there are shops with popular art, super market, taverns, ouzo bars, bars and cafeterias.
