| General info |
Lipsi are a cluster of islets in the southeastern Aegean, located east of Patmos. Their name is taken from the largest island, Lipsi, which is consisted of two landmasses, joined together by a narrow 400 m wide neck. Around the main island, 24 islets and 6 rocky peaks make up an impressive island group. It is a tranquil little island still untouched by mass tourism. Behind the port is the picturesque settlment of Lipsi with its white washed houses and blue shutters. According to the tradition, the founder of the settlement was a Cretan called Ilias or Lios. In the beginning he established himself and his family in the cave found above Lientou beach, but he later constructed his house on the rock dominating the harbor on the central square, where the museum lies today. At the center of the town is the impressive church of Ag. Ioannis Theologos with its blue dome and two bell towers where there, in a ground floor hall is the archaeological collection of Lipsi. One of the most significant old churches of the island is Panagia of Charos, built around 1600 AD. The church was named after the original icon of Virgin Mary who holds crucified Christ in her arms. Very important are the monuments belonging to the early Christian period. |
