  Dodecanese - Syme
General info
Symi has been following the same course through the years with that of the rest Dodecanese. Its inhabitants were occupying with the sponge-fishing and the ship-building enjoying significant priviledges when the island was conquered by the Turks in 1522. In Symi it was signed the Protocol of delivery of Dodecanese to the Allies. It was integrated to Greece in 1948.
It is a picturesque mountainous island extended in an area of 58 sq.km. and it is in a distance of 242 n.m. (18 hours) from Piraeus.
In the inland there are small valleys, while the coasts are steep and rocky and others are sandy forming small gulfs.
The capital of the island Symi consists of the Upper Symi and Ghialos. The new-classical, painted in different colours houses climb up to hillsides. Most of them are two-storied houses with tile roofings, balconies in new-classical style and fireplaces in the courtyards. The entire Symi has been declared as preservable place.
The picturesque harbour is always busy and crowded due to the fact that many ships-sailing boats, cruise ships etc. are mooring in it.
Reaching the island by the ship you will see the tower with the clock. Here it is the region Mourayio.
The hillside where the Town Hall is located is called Mavrovouni. Nearby there is Harani, Kampos, Koulountri, Pitini, Kali, Pano Horio all joined together.
You can visit the Castle of the Knights in the highest place of the Horio. It is built on the ruins of the ancient and byzantine one and has panoramic view to the region Horio and Ghialo
