General info
In the 8th B.C. century it was under the domination of Eretria and then of Athens. In 1207 the brothers Ghizi took the island under their sovereign till 1390 and afterwards they were the Venetians who ruled the island. One of the most considerable events was the finding of the holy icon of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) in 1823.
The island of Megalohari (Virgin Mary the Graceful) and of the picturesque dove-cots is extended in an area of 194 sq.km. and is in a distance of 86 n.m. (5 hours) from Piraeus.
The capital and harbour of the island Tinos or Hora was built in the 18th century, after the destruction of Exobourgou.
The most significant sightseeing of the island is the church of Panaghia (Virgin Mary), built of white marble. It was built in 1823 in the location where the holy icon has been found that is considered to be a work of Evangelist Lucas.
In a region full of vegetation it is situated the monastery of Aghia Triada set up in the 11th century.
You can also visit the very interesting Art and Sculpture Gallery of Tinian Artists and Contemporary Greek Painters, near the church of Panaghia.
In the Archaeological Museum situated near the church of Panaghia you will see findings from various regions of the island, sculptured works from the temple of Possidonas and Amfitriti.
Very close to Hora there is the village Kionia in a green environment. Here in antiquity there was the sanctuary of Possidonas and Amfitriti. Excavations brought into light parts of the foundations of two temples, of a guesthouse, of a bathroom as well as of a stand dated back to the Hellenistic Period.
In the village Kampos you will see the most of the dove-cots of the island with rich outside decoration.
The impressive village Pyrgos is built in a green environment and is in a distance of 25 km. from Hora. The village is the birthplace of many eminent artists as Nikiphoros Lytra, Demetris Filipotis, Giannoulis Halepas. Here there is also a School of Fine Arts, the house of Giannoulis Halepas being a museum nowadays, the Museum of Sculpture with works of local artists and several workshops of sculpture.
Near the village Steni it is located the monastery of Kechrobouniou, one of the biggest and most beautiful of Greece that looks alike a cycladic settlement.

Local festivals
In the 23th of July is celebrated the vision of Saint Pelagia thanks to it the picture of Holy Mother was found. Every August are honored the heroes of the destroyer "Elli" which was destroyed on the 15th of August 1940. On the 15th of August the worship of the picture of the Holy Mother. On the 25th of March , the day of the Annunciation, religious and other festivals.
Beaches
Near the town in Stavros, Saint Markos and Kionia. Beautiful beaches in Saint Fokas, Saint Sostis, Saint John Porto, Pahia Ammos, Saint Romanos, in the bay of Kolibithras, in Saint Nikitas, in Panormos. Also in the bay of Isternion, the bay of Livada, Halakes, Apothikes.
