| General info |
| The necropolis that was found in the area of Ellinika, as well as the remains from the ancient city of Kimolos, testifies that Kimolos was already lived in, in the Mycenean years. Later on, in the Middle Age, the pirates found shelter in the well-protected caves of the island. The history of Kimolos followed that of Milos. Half hour with the caique from the north-eastern coast of Milos is situated the small island of Kimolos that is 36. sq. km in extent and 88 nautical miles from Piraeus (7 hours). The small port, Psathi, the traditional Chorio, Rema, Goypa, Karas and Alyki are the settlements of the island. Un uphill street leads to Chorio, the capital of the island with the beautiful architecture, the exceptional Venetian Castle, the beautiful churches, the picturesque windmills. In front erects the hill with Doctor’s Mill (Mylos tou Giatrou) that now functions as rented apartments. Between the remarkable churches it distinguish that of Virgin Mary [Odigitria], the one of Christ (16th century), the church of Taxiarchis (16th century), the one of Eyaggelistria’s (17th century), the church of Chrysostomos (16th century) and others. In the beginning of the village is located the Nursing home of Poor, which was founded by the benefactor of island Georgios Ikonomou Afentakis. Psathi, the island’s harbor and seasonal settlement, constitutes Chora’s extension. The houses unfold round the occlusive gulf and above towards Chora. In the cove of the small bight, carved into the rocks are the “syrmata” with colorful doors where the boats are being kept. With caique from the harbor of Psathi, you can see near Asprogremna the ruins of the ancient city of Kimolos. In the coast of Ellinika exist ancient graves buried in the sand, as well as splinters of vessels from the geometric and archaic years. Worth visiting are also Fikiada, Mavrospilia, Saint Thanassis with its big carved caves and on the hill the medieval Palaiokastro. You can reach at the cave of Vromolimni - the biggest cave carved into a rock - by caique from Psathi or by donkey from Chorio. |
